Un journaliste allemand (Rüdiger Vogler) traverse les États-Unis en voiture pour faire des recherches en vue d'un article ; c'est un voyage décevant, au cours duquel il n'arrive pas à s'attacher véritablement à ce qu'il voit. Les choses changent cependant lorsqu'il n'a d'autre choix que d'emmener avec lui une jeune fille nommée Alice (Yella Rottländer) lors de son voyage de retour en Allemagne, après que sa mère (Lisa Kreuzer) - qu'il vient de rencontrer - lui a confié l'enfant. Bien qu'ils soient d'abord en désaccord, ils commencent à se lier d'une amitié improbable.
